Entering the Villa Rustica

Layout of the half timbered house. This building had central floor heating. The hyponics technique was used and this building had a constant temperature of 20-23 degrees celsius all winter long and used a low wood-source. A rock and brick foundation was finished with wood walls and a tile roof.

This is the right side of the villa which faces you as you enter the present site.

This is an overview of the site. The main villa flanked on both sides by work rooms, baths, and worship areas. On the right is a storage and grain drying building. In the back left side are working and living quarters for the servants. Back and center is a threshing area with a drying kiln for grain. Back and right is building with another drying kiln and a storeage area . There was a well between the main house and the back center building.

The stone toilets had a water flushing system.

This looks at the center of the main villa. The covered area protects the worship site which was in a basement room on the left side of the villa.

The two story main house was 31 meters long. Its ground floor had 14000 square meters of space. The upper floor had 750 square meters of usable space. 27 colums held up the roof. The front had a large arcade porch which kept the building cool in the summer. The roof was made of red tiles. The walls were made of red sandstone.

This view shows the area of baths, toilets, and beyond them the oven for baking bread.
