The Villa Rustica reminds us of the foundations upon which our modern western society has been built. These ruins show us how the early Roman people lived in this area. This villa pre-dated the coming of Christianity and the takeover of the area by German culture. The citizens of Wachenheim have attempted to excavate and maintain this link to their distant past.
It was a special treat that we were able to visit the villa during a weekend that Germans interested in reviving Roman life were also there. I want to thank all those people who participated in this event for their efforts in bringing some Roman culture to life for us. If you visit this area of Germany, do stop and visit the Villa Rustica. It would be easy to combine this with a visit to the famous Bad Durkheim wine fest held each year in late September and early October. In addition, the nearby area has several interesting medieval castles, from a different era, that are worth visiting.
