THE LOWER CASTLE STRUCTURE STARTS

The back of the guardhouse was open so that defenders could attack anyone who was caught between the forward eastern defenses and the old medieval castle walls.

The southern castle wall runs from the gate tower to the end of the western Berg's drop off. The steep sides required only a light defense wall and some small turrets.

The gate tower and the castle wall.

A drawbridge and dry moat have been replaced with this road way into the fortress. A second gate and wall was built behind the first wall to provide a secondary defense of the entrance. This second wall was attached to a building on its southern end.

Once built to house troops and supplies, this building was restored in 1894. It was used as office space for the local government until 1931 when it was turned into a youth hostel. It was redone in 1964 and is a restraunt and hostel today. It is being expanded westward to enlarge the hostel.
