ENTERING THE MIDDLE CASTLE GROUNDS

The western and eastern palas made up the northern wall of the castle. Both buildings had windows looking out the north side of the castle. The window seats used in medieval times are well preserved here.

A tower and wall set this palas area off from the upper castle and the keep.

The palas walls had windows on the southern inner side also. The palas was a two story building. It also had a basement below these two stories.

The windows in the eastern palas were smaller, deeper, and let in less light and cold than those in the western palas. The eastern palas also had two sets of great chimneys. Fire places were located on each floor of the palas.
